View from Mars Hill: Super blue blood: A moon by any other name

Image
"Actually, the Moon does occasionally appear blue, the result of dust or smoke from large fires or volcanic eruptions on Earth" Wikimedia Commons The Internet is rife with stories about a “super blue blood moon” that will appear on the morning of January 31. While these descriptors are scientifically dubious, they have become popular in the media and are also for the most part based on the actual orbital behavior of our nearest neighbor and hence worth explaining. To start with, all these terms refer to a full moon, a lunar phase occurring when Earth lines up directly between the Moon and Sun. This means the latter two bodies are opposite each other in the sky; as the Sun rises in the East, for instance, the Moon sets in the West. Since the Moon orbits Earth in a slightly elliptical path, the distance between the two bodies varies. When they reach their closest approach to each other—a point known as perigee—the Moon appears a bit larger and brighter than whe...

This Mind-Blowing Video About The Universe Is The Reason You Won’t Sleep Tonight

The Digital Universe Atlas is the world’s most complete 3D map of the universe, maintained and updated by astrophysicists at the Hayden Planetarium. When I watched this video, it was like all my problems just dissolved and seemed so trivial… “There are more stars in our Universe than there are grains of sand on all the beaches on Earth.” There are 100 to 400 billion stars in the Milky Way and more than 100 billion galaxies in the Universe – maybe as many as 500 billion. If you multiply stars by galaxies, at the low end, you get 10 billion billion stars, or 10 sextillion stars in the Universe – a 1 followed by 22 zeros. At the high end, it’s 200 sextillion. These are mind bogglingly huge numbers. How do they compare to the number of grains of sand on the collective beaches of an entire planet? This type of sand measures about a half millimeter across. You could put 20 grains of sand packed in side-by-side to make a centimeter. 8000 grains in one cubic centimeter. I...

There are more than 200 countries in the world, and we’re sure you’ve heard of each of them at least once. But there are states and territories on our planet we never knew existed. They occupy a super small area, and some of them are inhabited by just a couple of families. Blaze Tech Education   has decided to make a list of the top ten tiniest countries with a population smaller than that of a medium-sized city or even a small village. 1.Palau The Republic of Palau is an island country which consists of more than 300 islands of different sizes. Palau is one of the most amazing places on Earth: its rain forests are full of unique plants and birds, and its territorial waters are inhabited by 130 threatened species of shark. But the most remarkable sight in the country is the  lake , with ...
